南インドのグマタプラ村で、2025年10月24日、村人たちが牛糞を互いに投げつけ、体に塗りつける祭り「ゴーレハッバ」が行われた。ディワリ(光の祭り)の終わりを告げる、地域の行事である。
信者たちは、村の守り神ビーレシュワラ・スワーミーが牛糞の中から生まれたと信じている。ヒンドゥー教では、牛糞は神聖で、けがれを払うものとされる。
この日、数十人が参加した。
In the south Indian village of Gummatapura, on 24 October 2025, villagers flung cow dung at one another and smeared it on their bodies, in a festival called Gorehabba — a local rite marking the end of Diwali, the festival of lights.
The faithful believe their guardian deity, Beereshwara Swamy, was born in cow dung; in Hinduism, cow dung is held to be sacred and purifying.
Dozens took part.
