June 1, 2026 — In a forest where they were thought gone, a trail camera caught three bongos

Africa's rarest antelope turns up 200km from its known stronghold in Kenya

🇰🇪 Maasai Mau forest, Kenya

A trail camera in Kenya's Maasai Mau forest, an area where they were thought to be locally extinct, captured three mountain bongos — Africa's rarest antelope species — including one mature male and a young male and female, roughly 200km from the animal's known stronghold in the Aberdare mountains. "The excitement in camp was unbelievable when we first looked through the photos," said Oscar Dyer, operations director of the Mountain Bongo Project (MBP), which made the discovery. Stuart Nixon, a senior manager at Chester Zoo, said, "It's difficult to put a finger on why numbers aren't increasing." A 2025 survey found only 28 mountain bongos remaining in the main Aberdare stronghold, with roughly 900 left worldwide including those in zoos and sanctuaries. Unlike the Aberdare population, the Maasai Mau bongos live outside any national park protection.
