The state school-building guideline requires railings and barriers to be at least 1.1 metres. This school's railing was 1.03 metres, seven centimetres short. The building office measured it and found out.

The authorities first asked the head whether she could keep watch herself, but when she declined, they sent security guards.

As a result, twelve guards were posted on the school stairs to make sure no child fell. The guards sit on children's chairs to keep watch.

The acting head said she was 'stunned,' that 'the railing has been there for a hundred years and there has, as far as I know, never been an accident,' and that 'it could have been fixed cheaply at a hardware store.' One pupil says she feels she is always being watched.

The cost of the guarding is about 13,700 euros a week. 'That is our annual budget,' the head said. It is expected to continue for another two to four weeks, until the railing is fixed.
