州には、村の名を個人・宗教・カースト・サブカーストにちなんで付けてはいけない、という2009年の通達があった。州政府は2020年の末にこの二村を作る通知を出していたが、住民が「個人名に由来する」と異議を申し立てた。
高裁の単独裁判官が一度これを取り消し、別の合議体が覆したが、最高裁は「政府は自ら定めた政策に反して行動できない」として、取り消しを復活させた。バルメール県は、ラジャスタン州の西部、パキスタンと接する砂漠地帯にある。
In December 2025 India's Supreme Court struck down the naming of two new villages in Barmer district, Rajasthan, after individuals. The villages, 'Amargarh' and 'Sagatsar,' had been carved out of Sohda village and named after men called Amarram and Sagat Singh.
The state had a 2009 circular barring the naming of villages after individuals, religions, castes or sub-castes. The state government had created the two villages by a notification at the end of 2020, but residents objected that the names came from individuals.
A single High Court judge had quashed it, another bench had reversed that, and the Supreme Court restored the quashing, holding that 'the government cannot act contrary to its own policy.' Barmer district lies in western Rajasthan, in the desert along the border with Pakistan.
