Barbados launches a pilot program against crop-raiding monkeys

Barbados, Saint Michael

Barbados' Ministry of Agriculture has announced a new cross-departmental pilot program to tackle both human crop theft and monkey crop-raiding. Minister Chantal Munro-Knight revealed the plan at a breakfast meeting in Saint Michael on June 30. Earlier this year, the ministry and police had already set up an "Antipraedial Larceny Task Force" to combat farm theft. At the briefing, the minister said that whatever farmers manage to grow, the monkeys get to it first, calling it a structural obstacle to expanding production. The new pilot is meant to deliver practical solutions with concrete deadlines and measurable targets. The ministry also outlined plans, to be advanced within three months, for a youth agricultural internship program and new export packhouses.
