ベルギーのアールテルにあった、同国で唯一のUFO記念碑が、目撃者の遺族の求めで撤去された。

Aalter, a municipality in East Flanders between Ghent and Bruges in northern Belgium, removed a monument that had stood in the hamlet of Lotenhulle in late September 2025. It was the only monument dedicated to UFOs in Belgium.

The event behind it dates to 21 July 1955, Belgium's national holiday. Marin Vandercruyssen, then an eighteen-year-old paratrooper, saw five silver discs hovering silently above the E40 motorway, then designated the E5. The discs formed up three in front and two behind, and about twenty people stopped their cars to look up. He came forward to the council only in 2004; the councillors were sceptical at first but accepted the account after hearing other witnesses. The memorial stone bore the date, the number of witnesses, his name, five oval symbols, and a photograph of him as a young man.

The monument had been restored only in July 2025. But the family of Vandercruyssen, who died in 2020, no longer wished to be associated with the sighting, and through a lawyer told the council it would claim damages unless the monument was removed. The municipality, without giving details, confirmed only that it had complied last week.
