At around 8:30 a.m. on June 3, a herd of cattle that had escaped a nearby pasture wandered into the district hospital in Wolfhagen, Hesse, Germany. The pasture sat about 800 meters away, and the cows appear to have gotten loose sometime overnight.
The herd approached the hospital's automatic doors, which opened for them, then walked across the tile floor and up the stairs. Police said 8 cows were involved, with 6 reaching the second floor; the hospital's director, Daniel Holtmann, put the number at 7 cows, with 5 making it to the third floor. The two counts have never been reconciled.
The cattle, a normally docile Charolais breed, stuck to the hallways and stairwells and never entered a patient room, so no patients encountered them. Staff called the farmer, and within about an hour the animals were herded into a mobile pen towed by a tractor and taken home. The only damage was some cleaning and a bit of repainting.
