June 14, 2026 — The wild civet cub she cared for 17 years ago turned up in her son's schoolbook

An Assam family's story with a rescued civet cub made it into a national textbook

🇮🇳 Kampur, Nagaon district, Assam, India

In Kampur, Nagaon district, in India's northeastern state of Assam, a wild civet cub fell from a coconut tree in 2009. Anjali Saikia took in the orphaned cub, later named Bhakat, and raised it alongside her own six-month-old son. Seventeen years later, in 2026, that son — now known as Gibon Saikia — opened Unit 6 of his 10th-grade English textbook, "Words and Expressions 2," at his Navodaya school and realized the story printed there was about his own family and Bhakat. He hadn't even known, until he read the textbook, that he was the baby in the photographs. The story had originally been documented over ten days by documentary filmmaker Rommel Shunmugam, and was later adopted into the Class 10 curriculum of India's Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
