The new president of Mannar village council chooses, as his first act in office, to clear with a digger the heap of rubbish in front of the bus stand.

At the village council of Mannar, in Alappuzha district of the southern Indian state of Kerala, the newly elected president, B. K. Prasad, began as his first undertaking in office a drive he called "Waste-Free Mannar." A local English-language paper reported it on 26 January 2026.

The first thing tackled was the heap of rubbish that had built up on both sides of the road in front of the bus stand; this was cleared away with a digger. Bags of rubbish thrown into the drainage canal, and dumping on vacant plots and into the undergrowth, were also cleared.

This was a place where the authorities had stepped in several times before, each time to no lasting effect, with the rubbish returning. The president said surveillance cameras would be fitted at the same spot within the week.
