Taijiang National Park in Tainan, Taiwan, announced on June 17, 2026, that vehicle traffic will be banned along a two-kilometer stretch of coastal road on three separate five-day periods between July and September to protect mangrove land crabs during their peak breeding and migration seasons.

Taijiang National Park is a coastal wetland and mangrove park on the western edge of Tainan, a city of roughly 1.88 million people in southwestern Taiwan. The controlled section runs between Lane 1105, Section 3 of Chengxi Street and the Qingcaolun Coast Guard Post. The closure periods are July 1-5, July 30-August 3, and August 29-September 2, in effect from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. each night.

The mangrove land crab is Taiwan's largest terrestrial crab and is nocturnal. During breeding season, females cross roads to reach the coast and release their eggs, and road kills had prompted the annual closures. Officers from the Seventh Special Police Corps and park volunteers will patrol during the restriction periods.
