Newton on Trent parish council, in England, decides to have the rain-soaked notice board stripped of all its varnish and re-coated with oil — by the man who made it.

The parish council of Newton on Trent, in Lincolnshire, eastern England, discussed the parish notice board at its meeting on 9 February 2026, held at St Peter's Church.

The board's varnish had begun to crack, and rainwater was soaking into the wood. The man who made the board was therefore asked to strip off all the old varnish and re-coat it with oil instead. Oil, the council was told, soaks into the wood and protects it better.

At the same meeting it was reported that a new memorial bench for the churchyard had already been bought and was in storage, and that a quote for its installation had been requested.
