On 17 May 2026, Kazakhstan launched a large-scale cloud-seeding program in its southern Turkistan Region in partnership with the United Arab Emirates. The project targets more than 900,000 hectares of farmland and is described as a response to drought and desertification. Cloud seeding is a weather-modification technique that disperses substances into clouds to encourage precipitation.
The day after the experiment began, Kazakhstan's meteorological agency forecast heavy rains across several southern regions, and social media filled with speculation attributing the downpours to the operation. The agency later clarified that the rainfall was caused by a naturally occurring low-pressure system.
Former Kyrgyz Prime Minister Akylbek Japarov warned that atmospheric systems do not respect national borders and that widespread weather modification 'could be long-term and affect the entire ecosystem of Central Asia.' Robert M. Rauber, a professor at the University of Illinois, said cloud-seeding effects are very local and do not reduce rainfall in neighboring countries.
