Abonse in Ghana's Eastern Region holds the remains of a former slave market and a gold market. A tourism office has been established at the site, yet the 10.2-km trunk road leading to it has gone without repair since 2017, prompting traditional leaders to raise public objections.
The town sits in the Akuapem North area and once served as a crossroads on old trade routes. Its historical significance has placed it on Ghana's tourism map. The road deteriorates further during rainy seasons, limiting access for visitors and residents.
Chiefs say a tourism office cannot serve its purpose without a usable road and have called on authorities to carry out the repairs. The Ghana Tourism Authority has expressed a commitment to developing slave-trade heritage sites, but no construction date for the Abonse road has been announced.
