Tunisia: Two Neighboring Towns Trade 'Diplomatic-Style' Protest Notes Over a Trash Dispute

A document exchanged between two neighboring local authorities in Tunisia's Nabeul governorate, Kélibia and Hammam Ghezaz, circulated on social media and drew widespread mockery.

The letter, sent by the head of Kélibia's local development council to his counterpart in Hammam Ghezaz, was titled "Request to refrain from intervention outside one's territorial jurisdiction," and accused a Hammam Ghezaz council member of "encroaching" on Kélibia's local affairs.

Its language echoed the grave tone of an international diplomatic protest over sovereignty violations, even though the actual dispute concerned mundane local matters such as sanitation coordination and the use of shared public spaces.

It was locally likened to a mini "border dispute," and social media users joked that the two towns needed a "peace roadmap" or a "mediation committee."
