"Was There Really a Bear?" — Doubts Cast on Reported Mushroom-Picker Attack

A report circulated that a mushroom picker had been attacked by a bear in broad daylight in Sēme Parish near Tukums, Latvia.

A column in the regional paper Neatkarīgās Tukuma Ziņas, written by Rūta Fjodorova, raises several doubts: the attack was said to have happened at a hot, dry, midday hour unsuited to mushroom picking; the alleged victim has not been identified; and the incident has no record with police, the municipality, or the nature conservation agency.

The story spread further after a public figure, Aldis Gobzems, published a "bear photo" reportedly taken near a children's playground.

The column suggests the whole episode may be a deliberate fabrication aimed at securing a commercial hunting permit, concluding that the bear's actual existence has not been confirmed.
