Toktogul District Considers a Name Change

The district government of Toktogul, Kyrgyzstan, is weighing a proposal to rename the district back to "Ketmen-Tobo." According to the district's official website, the current Toktogul district was established in 1926 and was called Ketmen-Tobo until 1939.

The renaming proposal was raised by a delegation elected from the district at the 4th National Kurultai (a national assembly of representatives), held December 25-26, 2025, in Bishkek. The venue was the Toktogul Satylganov Kyrgyz National Philharmonic — a hall named after the very poet whose name the district's current name honors and would drop.

The district government's site reported the proposal on February 4, 2026, and said it was collecting residents' opinions and votes through its Facebook page, stating "everyone's view matters." The article does not specify whether a formal decision-making procedure will follow.
