2026 — Mornings in the rice field, afternoons as the village doctor, evenings teaching the kids

One Sri Lankan villager wears five hats — and all of them fit

Alabodagama village, Horawadunna, Pannala, Sri Lanka

Weerakkody Rajage Sajith Mahendra Vijithasiri lives in Alabodagama village in Horawadunna, Pannala, in western Sri Lanka. He holds a doctorate in traditional medicine from the Thalagapatha Saradharma Keerthi Traditional Medicine School and works as a traditional physician specializing in arthritis and spinal conditions. In the mornings, he works his own rice paddy; in the evenings, he oversees the village children's studies as a teacher. His home has been converted into a village community center called the Sama Mukthi Freedom Gallery, which since 2015 has also housed the Samamukthi learning center he founded. He is also a published poet, a karate instructor, and takes on carpentry work around the village — known locally as a man who wears many hats at once.
