ジョスト・ヴァン・ダイクは英領ヴァージン諸島に属する島で、人口は約300人。島の主要な生活道路であるグレート・ハーバー・ロードが、ルディーズ・マーケットプレイスからフォクシーズ・タマリンド・バーに向かう東行きの一方通行に変更された。
変更は住民160人超が署名した嘆願書の提出を受けて、通信・公共事業省が承認した。決定に先立ち、通信・公共事業大臣カイ・M・ライマー、事務次官エルヴィア・スミス=マドゥロ、第2選挙区代表メルヴィン・M・ターンブル、インフラ責任者デュアン・A・フレイツ、公共事業局と王立ヴァージン諸島警察の担当者が出席する会合が開かれた。
住民や事業者からは、この区間の安全面や運用上の支障についての懸念が寄せられていた。ライマー大臣は、省として住民の要望に安全かつ透明性のある形で対応するとし、完全な解決でなくとも課題の緩和を目指すと述べた。
道路には案内標識が設置され、一方通行の運用はすでに開始されている。ドライバーには標識に従うよう呼びかけがなされた。省は、この変更により交通の流れと安全性が改善し、緊急車両や配送車両のアクセスも向上すると見込んでいる。会合で挙がった道路工事などその他の要望についても、今後精査のうえ実施が検討されるという。
Jost Van Dyke, an island in the British Virgin Islands with a population of roughly 300, has changed the traffic pattern on its main road. Great Harbour Road is now one-way heading east, running from Rudy's Marketplace to Foxy's Tamarind Bar.
The change was approved by the Ministry of Communications and Works after more than 160 residents signed and submitted a letter requesting it. The decision followed a meeting attended by Minister for Communications and Works Kye M. Rymer, Permanent Secretary Elvia Smith-Maduro, Second District Representative Melvin M. Turnbull, Chief of Infrastructure Duane A. Fraites, and representatives of the Public Works Department and the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force.
Residents and business owners along the stretch had raised safety concerns and operational difficulties. Minister Rymer said the ministry would act on the residents' request in a safe and transparent manner, aiming to address, if not fully resolve, the problems raised.
Directional signage has been installed and the one-way arrangement is already in effect, with motorists asked to comply. The ministry expects the change to improve traffic flow and safety and to make access easier for emergency and service vehicles. Other road works raised at the meeting will be reviewed for future scheduling.
