Village of 140 Elects a Mayor With No Rival Candidate

In Bolivia's March 22, 2026 subnational elections, four municipalities registered only one mayoral candidate: three in Oruro department and one in Potosí.

The smallest is Todos Santos, in Oruro's Mejillones province, with a population of 140. Its sole candidate, Florentino Sandoval Colque, is guaranteed to become mayor without a runoff under the simple-majority rule for uncontested races.

The other three are Yunguyo del Litoral (population 875, candidate Widne Walter Amaru Visa), La Rivera (population 1,262, candidate Benjamín David Aguilar Gonzales), and Belén de Urmiri in Potosí (population 3,121, candidate Edwin Saravia Bautista).

Nationally, 117 to 120 political organizations took part in the vote, yet none fielded a rival candidate in these four municipalities. Electoral officials attributed it to low population density.
